There are things we can all do to prevent condensation and mould build up in our High Wycombe homes. Following the tips below will help to prevent problems with mould and condensation.

Top Tips for Preventing Mould and Condensation

1. Ensure your High Wycombe home is properly heated. The World Health Organisation guidelines suggest 21 degrees Celsius in a living room and 18 in the bedrooms, falling lower at night and when you are out. Warm air prevents condensation from forming.

2. Open windows when safe to do so. Open a window to rapidly circulate air around the home but avoid this if you live on a busy road with traffic pollution. Install an extractor fan to control air circulation.

3. Dry any wet areas immediately - for example a wet floor after a bath or after mopping. If the bathroom is not well ventilated, wet areas result in humid air causing mould infestations.

4. Dry wet clothes outside or in a dryer. Always make sure you use a vented or condensing tumble dryer. Drying clothes indoors can cause moisture which sparks dust mite and mould spore growth - posing a threat to those with asthma, hay fever and other allergies.

5. Use pot lids when cooking. This will also save you energy! Moisture generated from cooking can lead to condensation resulting in damage to the structure of the building.

6. Never isolate an extractor fan. Turning the fan off means moisture generated from showering and bathing will stay in your home.

7. Indoor plants; moist soil provides a perfect breeding ground for mould. Make sure to clean and move your plants around on a regular basis. Too many plants can raise humidity levels which could lead to mould and bacteria growth throughout the building.

8. Check over your High Wycombe home for leaks in the plumbing. If left untreated a plumbing leak can cause damage to your walls. When pipes running behind walls burst or leak they moisten the drywall; resulting in moisture that makes its way though the walls and produces wet spots.

9. Gas Heaters. Never use bottled gas heaters as they produce a lot of moisture from an average-sized gas bottle
